The Death of Croppy Nelson
The Death of Croppy Nelson is a film response to Episode 10 of Ulysses, Wandering Rocks by Owen Boss. The work explores the pressures of national identity and contemporary life through three songs at 18 key locations along the Liffey, the central nerve of Dublin.
Performed by Alma Kelliher, the initial two songs feature in the Wandering Rocks episode of Ulysses. The first, an English Nationalist folk song, The Death of Nelson, is sung by a one legged sailor on Eccles Street. The second, The Croppy Boy, an Irish Nationalist folk song, comes to the mind of Tom Kernan as he encounters the place where Robert Emmet was executed.
The work situates the viewer in between these two apparently contradictory tunes. As these two songs come to a close the artist proposes a third alternative in response and as a potential replacement.
